LoSS Summer 2008 Newsletter

So, the joy’s of the great British summer are upon us, a great mixture of oppressive humid heat and wet, grey days – don’t you just love it?! And, despite the distraction of summer holidays; the Olympics; too many beers at your neighbour’s barbecue, etc etc, Leigh on Sea Striders carries on regardless, with a varied Monday night training schedule at Leigh Marshes and a great line up stuff to do.

Events & Races

Lots of races listed on our website – a great way to parade your fantastic blue LoSS club t-shirt and also to meet other LoSS runners. And, don’t forget to get your entry in for the Southend 10km on Sunday 5 October, as no entries can be accepted on the day. This is a particularly popular, and beautifully flat, race that attracts more and more runners each year, so make sure you don’t miss out. A full list of forthcoming events is attached.

LoSS Summer Salad Trot

Once again we managed to put on some extremely hot weather which made it a tough morning for the 38 LoSS’ites who dragged themselves out of bed to run this event in late July. We absolutely promise, and can guarantee, cooler weather for our next club Trot … it’s on Sunday 28 December.

Decathlon 2008

Yet another rip-roaring success this year! To see the day in pictures (as opposed to hearing me ramble on about it), there are some great photos on the website.

Saturday Morning Track Sessions

Starting this Saturday (9th Aug) Mike Mansfield has kindly given up his time to run a track training session to accommodate all types of running abilities and goals. Cost is approx £3 per person for the use of the track at Southend Leisure & Tennis centre. Session starts at 9am so arrive 830am for warm up/stretch.

Essex Cross Country League

This year the club are entering the Essex cross country league as well as the Mid Essex league, the Essex fixtures which dates have already been announced (attached), take place on Saturday afternoons at 1400. The distances are approx 8.5k and all our welcome. We need six men and four women to make up a team so please support and let’s see if we can give some of the big boys a “Run for their money” !

England Athletics

As a club we are affiliated to England Athletics however as members of Leigh on Sea Striders you all are affiliated individually as well and therefore should receive a credit card size competition licence. If you haven’t received this please let Mark Dobson know.

*NEW* Beginner’s Group

Following on from the great success of our beginner’s group in January this year, we are again offering this great course, starting on 8th September. Joining LoSS’s beginner’s group is a fantastic way to get into running in a graduated, safe and enjoyable way. Whether you’ve never run before in your life; are looking to get back into running after a long break; get inspired by this summer’s Olympics, or want to just have a go to see if you can do it, well, our new September group is exactly what you need. Places will go fast (much like our January beginners by the end of their course), so if you’re interested in joining the group, or know of someone who might like to join, please send in your details asap.

Snacks of the season

This is usually a fairly sensible part of the newsletter, but hah, go, on, spoil yourself and have an ice cream … ‘tis the summer J

Happy running!
